About the Role

An educational summer camp based in Central London is seeking two Senior Pastoral Leaders to join the team on a residential basis this summer.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced pastoral, boarding, camp, education or youth-work professionals looking to take on a leadership role within a fast-paced and rewarding international summer programme.

Senior Pastoral Leaders play a vital role in the day-to-day operation of the centre, managing a small team of Pastoral and Activity Leaders (PALs), overseeing student welfare and leading the delivery of the evening social programme.

Working closely with Assistant Centre Managers, you will help ensure students aged 15–18 enjoy a safe, supportive and memorable summer experience.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Line manage a team of 3–4 Pastoral and Activity Leaders
  • Conduct regular check-ins and provide ongoing support and guidance
  • Act as the first point of contact for PAL queries and concerns
  • Escalate welfare, safeguarding or operational issues when required
  • Attend senior staff meetings and contribute to centre operations
  • Monitor overtime and support the management of TOIL arrangements
  • Help organise staff social events and wellbeing initiatives

Student Welfare & Pastoral Care

  • Support the wellbeing and safeguarding of students aged 15–18
  • Cover PAL duties where required, including supervision of student groups
  • Support arrivals, departures and student registration processes
  • Assist with attendance monitoring and student welfare checks
  • Follow Missing Person and safeguarding procedures when necessary
  • Facilitate effective communication between programme and centre teams

Social Programme Leadership

  • Lead and coordinate evening activities and events
  • Manage activity logistics, resources and staffing
  • Encourage high levels of student engagement and participation
  • Take responsibility for behaviour management during activities
  • Ensure activities are delivered safely and professionally

Weekend Operations

  • Support cultural excursions and activities across London
  • Oversee student free time procedures and sign-in/sign-out systems
  • Assist with student check-in and check-out processes
  • Work with senior staff to resolve ongoing student or operational issues

Administration & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate student and staff records
  • Attend daily team meetings
  • Adhere to all safeguarding, child protection and health & safety policies
  • Complete mandatory safeguarding and compliance training
  • Represent the organisation’s values and commitment to exceptional student experiences
  • Senior Pastoral and Activity Leaders work on a similar schedule to our PALs to support them in their role. You will be working on a split shift schedule, meaning you have lots of flexibility to fit this job around your other interests and commitments, such as university projects and enjoying the stunning location of Central London.
  • A typical week on a split shift schedule might look something like the table below. You will always have one full day off per week. On weekdays this will involve our ‘Morning’ and ‘Evening’ shifts, while on weekends you would work on a more flexible schedule to support the running of our weekend activities.

Morning Shift (9.30am – 11am)

  • Checking in on your team members
  • Greeting and registering the students for a morning check-in
  • Checking in on any students who are late for morning registration including door knocks for absent students
  • Accompanying students to their programme venue alongside PALs and programme delivery team
  • Ensuring handover to the delivery team runs successfully

Evening Shift (4pm – 11pm)

  • Attending a daily full team meeting for your centre
  • Check in with delivery team on any issues from the day
  • Support PALs and relevant students with visiting the nurse’s office for prescribed medication
  • Take full accountability for leading an activity from our exciting social programme
  • Monitoring student behaviour throughout the evening and ensuring students meet their evening curfew
  • Managing efficient pack-down of activity resources
  • Ensuring all team members finish shift on time

Weekend Shifts

  • Support your PAL team on running weekend activities for the students, including cultural activities around London such as museum visits, park trips, scavenger hunts and trips
  • Oversee free time for students, ensuring students sign in and out when going for free time or on approved leave from accommodation
  • Supporting with check in and check out of students
  • Liaise with senior staff to ensure any issues from the week have been escalated and successfully resolved

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience working with young people aged 15–18 in residential, boarding, educational or summer camp environments
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience
  • Strong pastoral care and student welfare skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Ability to remain calm, organised and solution-focused under pressure
  • Strong safeguarding awareness and commitment to student wellbeing
  • Ability to motivate, support and manage a small team
  • Professional, proactive and adaptable approach

Desirable

  • Experience coordinating activities, workshops, sports, trips or enrichment programmes
  • Experience working within international education settings
  • Graduate, early-career professional or mature student with relevant experience
  • Interest in education, youth work, pastoral care or student services
